I've been trying valiantly for 2 whole hours now, and i've decided that a web page just can't work in the way that I want it to. I'd prefer it to be seen maybe projected or on a telly etc. Web page just isnt the way to go, plus on web pages you get loads of distracting adds that kill the whole effect.
http://riseoftheapes.webs.com/index.htm
But I gave it a bash. It doesn't do what i've done justice. I'd prefer to do stuff myself.
Although I suppose this slots together with "viral" advertising, which considering the amount of time we spend on the internet would be the way to go. Half of the time though, anything with ads on it people will just click off for fear of viruses.
Rise Of The Apes

I'm quite proud of how my videos turned out :) I got the audio to sync well, in the middle it goes abit awry and I couldn't find as many people as I wanted to considering it was a wednesday dinner time :s but I really like it, it's like a flat rate budget version.
The new soundtrack is "here comes the king (Instrumental) by Xray dog" it's on the narnia soundtrack.

Oops
I finnished editing and jazz and I think when working with all my clips it worked much better with a slightly more serious soundtrack :)
While it's uploading and sorting out (I ended up using final cut rather than Adobe, it was reaaaaally slow and hard to work with on the gosta computers) I need to think about handing in and how i'm going to present my stuff. I've fulfilled most of my criteria I set myself, a trailer (viral advertising more than an actual trailer) and a poster (which is outside the back of where i live, and featured in the video, ape drawn ape propaganda)
maybe look into the website, but i'm not sure the idea will carry that far. It might take away from the idea.
I also probably should take those big posters back to odeon since I can't exactly use them.

I think i've found my backing track.
samples of original lines interlace in this remix.
Quoting.
Honorious: Tell us, why are all apes created equal?
George Taylor: Some apes, it seems, are more equal than others
----------
George Taylor: You Maniacs! You blew it up! Ah, damn you! God damn you all to hell!
----------
George Taylor: Take your stinking paws off me, you damned dirty ape!
---------
Julius: You know the saying, "Human see, human do."
Very funny when taken out of context.
I could use some of them?
Been filming bits today and I think I have some good stuff.
An ape thats intelligent enough to be accepted but ends up the way most intelligent people do, feeling wasted in society.

Monday
Footage Needed;
1. Ape hands stenciling ape figure onto floor.
2. Ape sat in huddle on floor like tramp, then looking up and it actually being said ape.
3. Ape stood in central area, then "preaching" lines from the film.
4. Guy being rude to ape
5. Ape freaking out.
6. "Are you ready?" title at the end with Rise of the apes stuff.
simple but effective, the only way to kinda get my point across, like it's a monkey who's just discovered it can think just like everyone else and then it gets treated badly and it knows then that it's better than everyone else and doesn't have to put up with it.
I think the humor is gonna have to draw from the fact that it's a low budget gorilla costume and not much else. I think elements are gonna be funny anyway.

- I've been pointed in the more viral advertisment view on this project and the cult of Planet of the apes

Taking stylisation from the whole premise.

Obey Giant.

Sounds complicated - but I can use a similar style in the way I'm gonna work. First of all i now need a stencil, unless i decide to paint in ink on the ground (picked ink because it can be washed away)

"The Obey campaign can be explained as an experiment in Phenomenology. The first aim of Phenomenology is to reawaken a sense of wonder about one's environment. The Obey campaign attempts to stimulate curiosity and bring people to question both the campaign and their relationship with their surroundings. Because people are not used to seeing advertisements or propaganda for which the motive is not obvious, frequent and novel encounters with Obey propaganda provoke thought and possible frustration, nevertheless revitalizing the viewer's perception and attention to detail. The medium is the message."

"ape shall not kill ape!"
After my tutorial (and being bed bound for two days) i've had lots of time to think and rethink my direction. I'm drawing more now on the humor aspect of what I like about Marcus Coates work.
I started to look into the hype surrounding the orginal film, and found there is so much merch i could open an entire shop of just planet of the apes gadjets.
even lego bits!!!!

"Reverse graffiti, also known as clean tagging, dust tagging, grime writing or clean advertising, is a method of creating temporary images on walls or other surfaces by removing dirt from a surface. It is often done by removing dirt/dust with the fingertip(s) from windows or other dirty surfaces, such as writing 'wash me' on a dirty vehicle. It is also used commercially as a form of guerilla advertising to reach consumers in an unconventional new way. The duration of adverts lasting in the street ranges from 8 - 16 weeks depending on the footfall intensity and weather conditions of any given advertising location.
Sustainable, eco-friendly advertising is highly visible due to its overt placement, predominantly in urban areas. Companies such as Microsoft, the BBC and Smirnoff have advertised their products in this way. In this context, marketers call it, "clean advertising" and "clean graffiti"."
I know ink isn't really included in this "biodegradable way of working" but maybe I could use water soluable ink and get it onto walls with a stencil?
Tuesday
Drawing.
litterally drawn enough gorillas to leave me sick of them for years.
small portion:
small portion:
Now all I need is my ideas the actual thing :)
NB: why is it always Gorillas (the biggest of the apes) that we think are our equivalents? why wouldn't there be many different kinds of monkeys for the different kinds of people? Humans are very self absorbed
Background
The facial similarities between humans and Apes is exploited with much of the previous advertising.
I'm struggling to find a similar font style :( I might have to go really retro and take a similar one from the comic series to do with the franchise?I think this is my personal favourite, and it works well because it has both elements of human and ape, however, obviously, at this point, earth hasn't been monkey-taken-over yet so it would have to be abit more leading.
Although this is a really interesting poster/cover, it's very busy. theres quite alot going on, and it distracts the eye abit.

Bemis Balkind - Beautifully digitalised promotions for tv and film.
Tying in with some of the original artwork, it could be an idea to do a really close up shot of a gorilla face, not looking all grim and angry, but human. I really like this film poster anyway, although the text isn't bold enough to stand out from his face.

The reason i'm first annalysing a poster ( even though it's not a massively inventive way of attracting interest within film promotion) and creating a poster is because i think this is the most effective way of drumming up interest, I personally react more to posters, because they can go anywhere, plus once i have a concept for this, i can carry that concept through to trailer and I've been thinking about sending someone out in my monkey suit and putting up more guerrilla marketing. (excuse the pun)
Monday
advertisments//posters.
I went to odeon to ask if they had any large scale posters that I could have or look at or w/e and they gave me some, (very hard to carry home :( ) and i've now got to unwrap them and look at them, apparently they're narnia related which will tie in well with wanting to look more at animals. Anyway, inside this booklet detailing whats coming up in the film scene for the next few months (excellent promotion by the cinema itself!) I looked at a few of the film (minni) posters they included.
Better idea of what I want to do now :)
Location Location.
Originally I'd picked the photobooth brief so I was taking lots of pictures of them around the city centre, although I'm not wasting them because people advertise on them all the time! so here you go:
Marcus Coates.
This is very similar in concept to the entire film franchise, we're using the apes as a social experiment of "what if the entire evolutionary process was reversed? would we like to be put in cages" etc.
Marcus Coates adds an element of humor in his work which makes it more endearing, but this film from all the synopsis' that i've read, the film doesn't seem to hold alot of hope. It's saying we can't win and we were lucky we got the upper hand in the first place. We underestimate the intelligence of the animals we keep penned up. Scary. Still, i think taking the animals to the forefront of what i'm doing and keeping the main focous on them is the most important thing.
Banksy.
I like the idea of taking the animal into the centre of the art, although banksy did get a little slammed for his "illegal" use of the indian elephant above. It makes it all the more drastic to have this big creature we wouldn't usually see. Obviously it'd be dangerous to rent a live gorilla (not to mention cruel) but I think It would be great to maybe use prehaps a gorilla suit?
Scratch that, Just bought one. Gorilla suit it is! :)
"The apes will not be actors in costumes but rather rendered digitally to be photo-realistic by WETA, employing certain of the groundbreaking technologies developed for “Avatar.” Peter Chernin and Dylan Clark will produce for Chernin Entertainment under its new pact with Fox. Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa wrote the screenplay and are producing."
All images are subject to (C) their original owners.
James Franco is set to play a scientist working on a cure for Alzheimer's by testing on apes. When test subject Caesar suddenly begins to mutate rapidly, the scientist takes him home to remove him from the cruel lab doctors. Freida Pinto and John Lithgow joined the cast on June 22, 2010. Andy Serkis will play Caesar, the ape that leads the revolt .(ANDY SERKIS ALSO FROM LOTRS)
Tom Felton will also star as the human character Dodge.
Also, I now have some actors to work with in my head, although I think it would make most impact maybe If I just used basically ape type pictures? a giant animal has more effect (at least on me personally) than a human.
+ It was mainly animals used in the original promotions.

So i've got a release date I can put on any kind of poster image."Rise of the Apes is a 2011 American science fiction film. The film is to be directed by Rupert Wyatt. This will be a new film in the Planet of the Apes series. It will be released in movie theaters on Wednesday, November 23, 2011."
Saturday
I'm working backwards by posting on here;
in accordance with my field guide submission I've spent the last week collecting, researching and gathering.
I've been starting at the begining before the film, to the first film "planet of the apes". (Hence the trailer down below)
I've been selecting sections of it that I think I could work with to form ideas.
Obviously, a monkey behaving in a very human way is going to be quite a shocking image (not to say that they don't act in a human way normally, but you get my drift)

It's very much a power stance quite like the above, but of course in the movie i'm meant to be promoting it's only at the start of genetic unlocking.
Lots of the trailer for the old film was high on repetition, which I think can make it look dated or like they didn't have quite enough stuff to make a trailer, It would have looked better if it was more snappy and short.
I do realise that this isn't for a film, but the Cadbury advert uses an ape to excellent effect, I think the close ups and the high contrast work really well.
